December is here, and with it comes the festive season’s magic (and mayhem)! From decorating the house to ticking off that ever-growing gift list, it’s easy to put your self-care and well-being on the back burner. But taking care of yourself is vital, especially if you want to enjoy all the festivities without aches and pains holding you back.
For me, this time of year is about slowing down and not waiting for the last cracker to be pulled to do this. I’m looking forward to family time, long walks with the dogs in the crisp winter air, and a chance to recharge. These little moments make the season so special, and they remind me of how important it is to look after ourselves so we can genuinely enjoy them.
With your self-care in mind, here are some practical tips to keep you moving and feeling your best this Christmas.
1. Lift Safely and Save Your Back
Whether you’re hoisting a box of decorations from or back into the loft or carrying shopping bags bursting with holiday goodies, lifting heavy items incorrectly can be very damaging to your back.
- Bend Your Knees: When lifting, bend your knees and keep the load close to your body. Avoid rounding your back—let your legs do the heavy lifting.
- Avoid Twisting: When you need to change direction, turn your whole body rather than twisting at the waist.
- Know Your Limits: If something feels too heavy, don’t risk it. Ask for help!
2. Stretch the Stress Away
All the shopping, wrapping, and socialising can leave your shoulders tight and your lower back aching. A few quick stretches can do wonders:
Shoulder Rolls
-
- Sit or stand tall. Roll your shoulders forward in a circular motion 10 times, then reverse.
-
- This helps release tension and improve circulation.
Cat-Cow Stretch
-
- Get on all fours with your hands under your shoulders and knees under your hips.
-
- Arch your back upwards (like an angry cat) and then gently lower it, letting your belly dip (like a happy cow).
-
- Repeat 5-10 times to stretch your back and improve flexibility.
Seated Forward Fold
-
- Sit on the floor with your legs extended straight out.
-
- Gently reach for your toes, keeping your back as straight as possible.
-
- Hold for 10-15 seconds to stretch your hamstrings.
3. Make Self-Care Your Priority
The season of giving doesn’t mean you should neglect yourself. Schedule a moment each day to pause, breathe, and reset. Whether it’s a short walk, a yoga session, or a quiet cup of tea, these little acts of self-care can make a big difference.
4. Don’t Ignore Persistent Pain
If you’re feeling more aches and pains than festive cheer, don’t brush it off. Physios like us are here to help you stay mobile and pain-free. Whether it’s a niggling backache or a twinge in your shoulder, booking a session could be the best gift you give yourself this Christmas.
I hope you find time to pause, stretch, and enjoy the moments that matter most this season. For me, those moments will include muddy walks with the dogs, laughing with family over a game of charades, and sneaking a quiet cup of tea amidst the chaos. What will yours look like?
Wishing you a happy, healthy and pain-free Christmas!
