“The Bobath concept, also known as “Bobath Normal Movement,” is a therapeutic approach developed in the 1940s by Dr. Karel Bobath, a neuropsychiatrist, and his wife, Berta Bobath, a physiotherapist. It focuses on promoting normal movement patterns in individuals with neurological conditions, particularly those with cerebral palsy and stroke. The Bobaths believed patients could improve their functional abilities and reduce abnormal tone and movement by facilitating normal postural control and movement. Initially developed to treat children with cerebral palsy, the concept expanded to adult neurorehabilitation.
The Bobath approach emphasises the importance of understanding how the nervous system controls movement and aims to restore motor control through hands-on techniques and sensory feedback, promoting recovery and independence.”
