February is our favourite month of the year, and over the years, the Sarum team and I have encouraged you to love yourself and make self-care a priority.
It is that time of the year when if we are lucky, the sky is blue, and while the air remains cold, we start to feel like coming out of hibernation. And with the lighter evenings, we might even be thinking of getting our fitness back on track – which got me thinking.
Make February the Month for Forest Fun
‘What Jenny’ you might be saying ‘, is this a national month we’ve not heard of before’. No, I made it up, but it is a beautiful time of year for exploring the forests near you. Unlike other times of the year, you can enjoy the beautiful shape of the trees and might even spot a snowdrop or two. And rather than a crunch underfoot, it’s more of a squelch – but don’t you love the sounds of nature?
I am so fortunate to have the stunning New Forest on my doorstep, which offers walking and cycling routes and much more. And if you are local to the area, you will undoubtedly driven through with children or grandchildren in the car, pointing at the animals and yelling pig, donkey or horse every few feet.
Not forgetting my very favourite place Mottisfont. Where I was walking recently, listened to the world awakening and saw the promise of a glorious Spring starting to appear with snowdrops showing. And I hope you get a feel for this beautiful place from the photo I took and share with this blog.
There is no better way than a walk
Unless you are a professional sportsperson, walking is a great way to get back into your fitness routine. An exercise very underrated and yet great for your heart, body and soul.
So, what do you have in your area if you’ve not a forest to explore? A park you can walk around maybe, a local moor or even better, a beach. Because a regular brisk walk can help you maintain a healthy weight, lose body fat, increase energy levels, and strengthen your bones and muscles.
Plus:
- Improve cardiovascular fitness
- Improve muscle endurance
- Improve your mood, cognition, memory and sleep
- Improve your balance and coordination
- Strengthen immune system
- Reduce stress and tension
I told you it was underrated.
Another reason we love February
It’s our birthday, and we are celebrating twenty-nine years this year. Hard to believe that the practice that is Sarum today was born out of a dream two physios had. A dream, a massive amount of encouragement, and a hope that the phone would ring, which it did – twice on that first day.
And now here we are, with five consulting rooms and a larger rehabilitation area, all fully equipped with the latest treatment technology. A team of physios, a masseur and our incredible chiropodist who has been with us for over ten years and possibly close to twenty.
Together we treat patients with all kinds of complaints, including those with back and neck problems, muscle and joint disorders, arthritis, and RSI. Plus, we support our maturer patients to stay mobile and doing what they love for as long as they want.
Laugher still rings through the building and is something that our patients have come to expect. I have welcomed new team members and said fond farewells to others – our team is a family, which is a beautiful thing to be part of.
I am very fortunate and have many, many stories to share. Perhaps I’ll write a book!
