Beating the winter blues can be easier for some and for others truly a challenge, particularly if you suffer Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
Days are shorter and there is definitely a chill in the air. Christmas is coming like it or not. Brexit and now a General Election is dominating the news. Not to mention the rain we’re having here in the UK, meaning most homes are turning into a laundry with washing hanging in every available space.
So, what can YOU do to beat the winter blues?
Here are Sarum’s five top tips but these suggestions are for those of us who just need a lift, a different way of looking at things. If you’re really struggling at this time of year, please consult with a professional.
1. Don’t stop the exercise.
While the miserable weather might mean you would rather snuggle up with the latest boxset we recommend you continue with the exercise. You may need to mix it up, change your routine and try something different. Or perhaps it’s time to get those exercise DVD’s out of the loft, the point is not to stop.
2, Embrace the weather.
There is nothing more energising than a walk in the rain and particularly if you can do this on the beach. The wind in your hair, the squelch of the sand and the smell of the sea is invigorating. Plus, you will meet fabulous people that are doing just the same as you … embracing the weather and blowing the cobwebs away.
3. Do something amazing.
This is the time of year when your elderly relatives and neighbours will most likely feel at their most vulnerable. Make the effort to visit, ask if you can pick up their shopping or prescription. Have tea, take a cake and be sociable with those that need you most. Volunteer at the local food bank or give time to a charity that matters to you.
4. Tackle the task you’ve been putting off.
Declutter and donate to charity. Paint the spare room, clear the garage or put the garden to bed. Deep dive into that pile of paperwork you’ve been ignoring. Get creative and make gifts to give this Christmas – there is still time. Make a list, start at the top and get started. And don’t forget to play your favourite upbeat music and if you feel like it dance the task away.
5. Be kind to you.
Need to slow down and want to jump into that pile of books growing in the corner – then now is the time. Treat yourself to a pamper, enjoy lunch with friends but put YOU first. Enjoy long leisurely baths, start preparing for the festive season and get ahead of the chaos.
